The airport is named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights, while the burden of taxation on peasants was reduced. He died on November 10, 1938 due to an illness.
Istanbul's high ratings regularly attract many people to open hubs here and making this place a very popular destination to make routes to. This makes the city very competitive for airlines and inexperienced players should avoid starting in this city if possible. However, Istanbul has a few plus points for airlines who use this city as a hub. Firstly, Istanbul's high ratings allow it to sustain fierce competition caused by as many as 4 or 5 competitors. In addition, the city strategic location allows a huge number of routes to be made in cities in Europe (e.g. Paris and Madrid), Asia (e.g. Tokyo and Hong Kong) and Africa (e.g. Cape Town and Lagos). Istanbul also acts perfectly as a stopover between cities in Europe and Asia. Usually, the best routes out of Istanbul are the monopolised flights to medium sized cities like Abu Dhabi, Casablanca, Male and Saint Petersburg compared to competition filled routes to large sized cities as the former often generates more profit than the latter.
Istanbul Atatürk Airport often will attain maximum slot usage within 20 to 25 years into the game. This makes the airport a prime choice for purchase when it comes to getting a national airport from the government. Due to the principal airport attaining full capacity, additional airports will be needed and this can be built by the national government or by other players. The construction of second and/or third airports are neither recommended or discouraged as the status of these airports can go as high as a level 6 or 7 in some cases or as low as a level 3 or 4 in others by the end of a game. This instability should be taken into consideration carefully before deciding to construct any additional airports here.
Like most major cities, the best planes in and out of the city are usually the ones with a high satisfaction and a large capacity like the Airbus A380, McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and Boeing 747 are recommended. When flying to small and medium sized cities, planes with a medium capacity are recommended. Ideal examples include the Boeing 767, Airbus A300, Ilyushin IL-96 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Small sized planes should not be used as the huge number of passengers and cargo will overwhelm the tiny capacities of the planes. This will result in multiple aircraft being needed and this will lead to increased maintenance costs and depreciation.
